Ten Principles for Bird-Friendly Forestry: Conservation Approaches in Natural Forests Used for Timber Production

چکیده
Bird–forestry relationships have been the subject of research and conservation initiatives for decades, but there are few reviews resulting recommendations use by forest managers. We define “bird-friendly forestry” as management that applies from seeking to reconcile logging with bird in natural forests used timber production. reviewed relevant studies synthesize 10 principles bird-friendly forestry: (1) protect enhance vertical structure through uneven-aged silviculture; (2) leave abundant dead wood different decay stages; (3) maintain residual large green trees; (4) create sufficient amounts uncut reserves corridors; (5) maximize interior retaining contiguous tracts landscapes functional connectivity; (6) buffers along streams, rivers, wetlands cultural urban landscapes; (7) horizontal stand vegetation diversity creating canopy gaps; (8) extend temporal scale cycles; (9) minimize post-logging disturbance forests, particularly during breeding season; (10) manage focal species guilds. These may serve guidelines developing plans customized regional priority species, a clearly articulated vision quantitative objectives which success can be measured.

Comparative effectiveness of silvicultural interventions for increasing timber production and sustaining conservation values in natural tropical production forests. A systematic review protocol
Background: Currently, about 400 million hectares of tropical moist forests worldwide are designated production forests, about a quarter of which are managed by rural communities and indigenous peoples. There has been a gradual impoverishment of forest resources inside selectively logged forests in which the volume of timber extracted over the first cutting cycle was mostly from large, old tree...
متن کاملEstimating Sustainable Timber Production from Tropical Forests
Natural forests in the humid tropics differ from temperate and plantation forests in several ways: there may be many tree species; many of these may occur infrequently; there may be a large range of tree sizes and shapes present; tree ages may be unknown and indeterminate; and despite the luxuriant appearance some rainforests, growth rates may be relatively low. This has many implications for t...
